Caterina Bortolussi uses the stories of successful Port Harcourt Models to empower Nigerian youths to exploit their creativity

 

Kinabuti led by Italian-born Nigeria-based fashion celebrity designer, Caterina Bortolussi, in conjunction with the Nehemiah Project, has taken the initiative to empower Nigerian youths by showing them avenues to exploit their creativity and make real their full capabilities.

At a motivational event held recently at the Expo Hall of Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, Caterina Bortolussi showcased her models, Kinabuti girls (as they like to be called), a group of 21 young ladies who were discovered in 2010 by the Kinabuti's 'In Our Ghetto Project' from various communities in Port Harcourt.

While commenting on the theme of the event 'Rebuilding lives.., this is my story,' Bortolussi said was an idea borne out of the need to encourage and promote the youths to develop and explore their God-given talent through showcasing life's stories of some celebrated Nigerians who have successfully pursued their dreams by utilising their innate talents.



Bortolussi emphasised that:"Empower the youths and you have empowered the nation.The strength of a nation lies in the youth as they are the future leaders of the country" According to her, the Kinabuti girls drawn from communities like Bundu Waterside, Eleme, Marine Base Waterside communities of Port Harcourt, hitherto had no skills at all in modelling, but had now become stars in the making, having been trained in modelling, make-up skills, and hairstyling, and now had all that was needed for professional modelling career through the Kinabuti's social enterprise arm.

The Kinabuti girls were given the humbling opportunity to strut the catwalk to showcase the amazing designs of accomplished designers such as Odion Mimonet, IAMISIGO and also Kinabuit Label and also were accorded the full accolades of professional models.

The event which played host to numerous celebrities such as TY Bello, D Banji, Lanre Da Silyva, All Baba, Fela Durotoye, Tara Durotoye, Funke Akindele had the duo of Kate Henshaw Nuttall and Tee-A as compeers for the exquisite night outing.

Students with the highest CPGA in Electrical Electronics Engineering, Management and Computer Science are the focus of The Etisalat Merit Awards



Nigerian telecommunications giant, Etisalat has presented scholarships to 60 outstanding University students under its Annual Merit Awards Scheme, as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility. The lucky students were drawn from 6 universities in the South-South and South East regions of the country.

The Etisalat Merit Awards is a scheme that offers university students the opportunity to secure grants for completion of their undergraduate degree programmes. It is designed to encourage and reward exceptional performance by students with the highest CPGA in Electrical Electronics Engineering, Management and Computer Science.

A statement made by the Chief Executive Officer of the company, Mr. Steven Evans said over 500 university students across the country have so far benefitted from the scholarship scheme since it commenced in 2009. Explaining the rationale behind the establishment of the scholarship awards, Evans said a research conducted in 2009 by the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) revealed that more than a billion people around the world can neither read nor write. The report further showed there is a strong correlation between education and development of any modern state, as several countries such as South Korea and Singapore have their development based on a foundation of heavy Management and Computer investment in the education sector.

While addressing the attendees, Evans said, "the merit award is part of the company's corporate social responsibility and it is a demonstration of Etisalat's commitment to educational development and promotion of excellence among the youths in the country. The vibrancy of the educational sector in Nigeria cannot be over-emphasized as therein lies the key to improvement in the quality of manpower.

"Etisalat is proudly a long term partner on this journey and I enjoin all recipients to use this opportunity to build on their previous achievements as the award serves as stimulus for development." The CEO also stated that

Etisalat is currently training teachers in Rivers states on English language and hopes to partner with the Rivers state government on other developmental initiatives in the nearest future. Whilst appreciating Etisalat on behalf of the Rivers State ...government, Mr. ThankGod said, "We are grateful for Etisalat's partic-ipation in educational devel¬opment in kfigeria and Rivers State. The Rivers state vision is embedded in infrastructural development and qualitative education and this partnership with Etisalat is a good initiative, which should be emulated by other corporate bodies."

ADMISSION REQUIREMENT - PGD
 The following are the entry requirements to be offered a place in the UPBS Postgraduate Diploma courses:

The applicant should have a degree or other qualifications at equivalent level.

The lower level qualification together with proven appropriate experience at the management level may be acceptable.

DURATION OF THE PROGRAMME
All Postgraduate Diploma Programmes are offered on Friday evenings and Saturdays to suit the convenience of the busy executives. The programme is made up of four modules and lasts for one academic year.

Executive MBA Programmes
Admission Requirements

 The criteria for admission into the MBA programme are as follows:
(i)    Candidates with Bachelors degree from a recognised University must obtain a minimum of second class lower division,
(ii)    All candidates must have minimum of three years managerial/administrative experience,
(iii)    All candidates must have demonstrated adequate intellectual capacity, professionalism, maturity and   effective decision-making and problem solving potentials during the University's entrance examination.
(iv)    Candidates with Postgraduate Diploma from a recognised University and who have passed with a minimum of Credit may also be considered for admission.
(v)    Candidates with good quantitative background and some basic knowledge of Economics will have added advantage.
(vi)    Holders of HND and/or professional qualification in administrative disciplines are eligible for admission but must go through a mandatory Postgraduate Diploma Programme.

Duration of ProgrammeAll the MBA/M.Sc/Postgraduate programmes are run on a modular system utilizing case-method of instruction, All programmes are offered on Friday evenings and Saturdays. All courses are sub-divided into self sufficient and logically consistent packages that are taught and examined within a quarter. A programme runs for at least 4 quarters plus one week intensive study in the 4th module.

The academically oriented students could earn credits by attending the regularly organized executive development short courses.

MTN - Scholar Programme Takes Budding Stars to USA Varsities




Nigeria's largest telecommunication company; MTN Nigeria Ltd; on Monday unveiled the pilot programme of a brand new soccer plus education event akin to soccer academies.

The event which attracted top soccer dignitaries like former national team skipper, Chief Segun Odegbami (MON), former national team goalkeeper and coach, Joe Erico, several internationals like Taju Disu, Lukman Oshun, Olu Lagunju, Wasiu lpaye and the man with the fastest goal in World Youth Championship history, Monday Odiaka, is geared towards ensuring a marriage between soccer and academics.

The Youth Segment Manager of MTN Kelvin Orifa, who represented MTN Executives at the event said the pilot programme will use the International Sports Academy in Wasimi, Ogun State, owned by Chief Odegbami, as venue for the maiden edition.

The programme open to students between ages 16-20, will see over 1000 students from across the nation,who have demonstrated soccer skills and the academia camping in Wasimi, after which 30-35 will be selected after SAT Examinations for top universities in the United States. Already close to eight centres have been opened for the maiden edition of the programme, from where students who make the cut will be ferried to Lagos for the final.

Interested students have been told they can log on to the programme with the short code 4000. for N50 per registration.
