MTN - Scholar Programme Takes Budding Stars to USA Varsities




Nigeria's largest telecommunication company; MTN Nigeria Ltd; on Monday unveiled the pilot programme of a brand new soccer plus education event akin to soccer academies.

The event which attracted top soccer dignitaries like former national team skipper, Chief Segun Odegbami (MON), former national team goalkeeper and coach, Joe Erico, several internationals like Taju Disu, Lukman Oshun, Olu Lagunju, Wasiu lpaye and the man with the fastest goal in World Youth Championship history, Monday Odiaka, is geared towards ensuring a marriage between soccer and academics.

The Youth Segment Manager of MTN Kelvin Orifa, who represented MTN Executives at the event said the pilot programme will use the International Sports Academy in Wasimi, Ogun State, owned by Chief Odegbami, as venue for the maiden edition.

The programme open to students between ages 16-20, will see over 1000 students from across the nation,who have demonstrated soccer skills and the academia camping in Wasimi, after which 30-35 will be selected after SAT Examinations for top universities in the United States. Already close to eight centres have been opened for the maiden edition of the programme, from where students who make the cut will be ferried to Lagos for the final.

Interested students have been told they can log on to the programme with the short code 4000. for N50 per registration.
